{"doi":"10.1093/biosci/biv095","title":"FORCE11: Building the Future for Research Communications and e-Scholarship","abstract":"V isit any science library: Where once you would have seen racks and racks full of journals, you now see empty space.This is not evidence of decline.As we celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first scientific journal, we are in the midst of a profound change in how research is communicated.Paper has largely been supplanted by digital means of dissemination.What has not changed nearly as much, however, is the process by which research is written, adjudicated, and published.Over the past decade, a growing number of researchers have highlighted problems in our current system and questioned our adherence to practices that often arose to accommodate the limitations of print.Can we update how we do science, as well as the medium by which we disseminate it?FORCE11 the Future of Research Communications and e-Scholarship, is an attempt to answer that question.It is a grassroots organization that seeks to coalesce and focus efforts toward the transformation of scholarly communication in the digital age.FORCE11 provides a platform for discussions and community-based efforts to define new directions and practices for the transformation of scholarly communication through technology.Membership is open to all, and participants are working on the gamut of issues across all aspects of research communication: questions of access, new forms of publication, new types of scholarly objects, credit and attribution, business models, and sustainability.An important aspect of all FORCE11 activities is the recognition that, in order to harness the power of technology to mine content and drive discovery, the systems we develop must work with machines and not just humans.For example, the Resource Identification Initiative (RII) at FORCE11 launched a pilot to make it easier for both humans and machines to identify reagents and tools used in published studies.To date, more than 47 journals are participating and more than 300 papers have appeared that supply unique identifiers called RRIDs (research resource identifiers) in the publications' methods sections, making it easier for humans and machines to determine what reagents and tools were used in a study.An important focus last year at FORCE11 was on data, with several activities devoted to elevating the role of data to a primary product of scholarship.FORCE11 hosted a working group of more than 25 organizations that developed the Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles (http://io.aibs.org/force11), a set of principles for how data should be cited in publications so that data producers can be credited for their work and the impact of data reuse can be measured.A second working group created a specific implementation of these recommendations (https://peerj.com/articles/cs-1/).This year, new working groups are forming that will be tackling pressing issues across scholarship-for example, taking a critical look at credit and attribution systems, particularly for new types of works, such as databases.At FORCE11, we believe that future generations will look back on this era as the beginning of a new form of digital science as","journal":"BioScience","year":2015,"id":8655,"datarank":1.8925014899232229,"base_score":3.4657359027997265,"endowment":3.4657359027997265,"self_citation_contribution":0.519860385419959,"citation_network_contribution":1.3726411045032638,"self_endowment_contribution":0.519860385419959,"citer_contribution":1.3726411045032638,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":31,"citer_count":25,"citers_with_citation_signal":22,"citers_with_endowment":22,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.0443,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2015-07-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":19003,"name":"Maryann E.
