The development of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas9 system has revolutionized the field of gene editing, thus facilitating efficient genome editing through the creation of targeted double-strand breaks of almost any organism and cell type. In addition, CRISPR-Cas9 technology has been used successfully for many other purposes, including regulation of endogenous gene expression, epigenome editing, live-cell labelling of chromosomal loci, edition of single-stranded RNA and high-throughput gene screening. The implementation of the CRISPR-Cas9 system has increased the number of available technological alternatives for studying gene function, thus enabling generation of CRISPR-based disease models. Although many mechanistic questions remain to be answered and several challenges have yet to be addressed, the use of CRISPR-Cas9-based genome engineering technologies will increase our knowledge of disease processes and their treatment in the near future.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.304065093204169,"endowment":4.304065093204169,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"27345434","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2466284841","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.7633,"citation_percentile":0.84792825,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":5},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":5},{"year":2021,"count":13},{"year":2022,"count":11},{"year":2023,"count":11},{"year":2024,"count":14},{"year":2025,"count":7},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/bfg/article-pdf/16/1/4/9982027/elw025.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/bfg/article-pdf/16/1/4/9982027/elw025.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/bfg/article-pdf/16/1/4/9982027/elw025.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/bfgp/elw025","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27345434","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://bfg.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/short/16/1/4","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["CRISPR and Genetic Engineering","Innovation and Socioeconomic Development","Pluripotent Stem Cells Research","Animals","Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats","Gene Editing","Humans","Models, Animal"],"mesh_terms":["Gene Editing","Animals","Humans","Models, Animal","Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats"],"keywords":["CRISPR","Genome editing","Cas9","Biology","Computational biology","Epigenome","Genome","Gene","Genome engineering","Genetics","Gene expression","DNA methylation","Cancer","Human disease","Biomedicine","Animal Models","Gene Editing"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-22T20:12:47.630655Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
