METHODS: Prospective observational study in 25 primary care practices in England and Scotland. Adult patients with known or suspected alcohol dependence (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test score ≥8) were followed for 6 months and were profiled using baseline data. Changes over time in treatment for alcohol dependence (strategy, goals, modality) and the level of compliance were examined. RESULTS: Targeted case identification was a feasible means of identifying patients with DSM-IV confirmed alcohol dependence in general practice. In the cohort (n = 218), mean total alcohol consumption was high (men: 86.9 g/day; women: 62.7 g/day) and psychiatric co-morbidities were common (depression: 25.8% of patients; anxiety disorders: 25.8% of patients). At baseline, about half of patients reported ongoing or planned treatment for alcohol dependence. Over 6 months' observation, treatment modalities did not change and most patients retained their original stated treatment goal of abstinence or reduced alcohol intake. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted case identification in general practice identifies patients with alcohol use disorder in need of treatment.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.3862943611198906,"endowment":1.3862943611198906,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"26801743","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2265847798","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.4511,"citation_percentile":0.66723053,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/alcalc/article-pdf/51/4/428/6658753/agv138.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/alcalc/article-pdf/51/4/428/6658753/agv138.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/alcalc/article-pdf/51/4/428/6658753/agv138.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/alcalc/agv138","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26801743","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://alcalc.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/short/51/4/428","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Substance Abuse Treatment and Outcomes","Alcoholism and Thiamine Deficiency","Health Services Management and Policy","Adolescent","Adult","Aged","Alcohol-Related Disorders","Female","General Practice","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Practice Patterns, Physicians'","Prospective Studies","United Kingdom","Young Adult"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Aged","Female","United Kingdom","Humans","Male","Middle Aged","Practice Patterns, Physicians'","Prospective Studies","Alcohol-Related Disorders","Young Adult","General Practice"],"keywords":["Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test","Alcohol use disorder","Abstinence","Alcohol dependence","Alcohol","Cohort","Medicine","Anxiety","Psychiatry","Observational study","Prospective cohort study","Cohort study","Depression (economics)","Internal medicine","Emergency medicine","Poison control","Injury prevention"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-23T15:29:55.300533Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
