{"doi":"10.1093/ajhp/zxab489","title":"Advancing pharmacogenomics into practice","abstract":"Individualizing and optimizing medication therapy using a variety of patient-specific factors is a longstanding and fundamental role for pharmacists. Genetic variation that can prompt changes in drug therapy is common for widely used medications, and for decades patient-specific genetic information has been utilized to guide the use of selected medications. However, in routine practice, using genomic information as a patient-specific factor to guide medication selection and dosing lags behind use of other patient-specific pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors such as renal and hepatic function. Pharmacogenomics remains an underused strategy to optimize medication effectiveness, improve medication-use safety, and reduce overall costs of care. This issue of AJHP includes an update to ASHP’s Statement on the Pharmacist’s Role in Clinical Pharmacogenomics.1 ASHP statements provide the organization’s fundamental views on a topic, and pharmacogenomics has rich opportunities for wider use in patient care, with an important role for pharmacists.
