{"doi":"10.1089/lgbt.2022.0281","title":"Mpox Stigma, Online Homophobia, and the Mental Health of Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men","abstract":"O n July 25th 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox (monkeypox) a public health emergency of international concern. 1 To date, the virus has primarily impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), 2 which had many of their advocates concerned about GBMSM being blamed for mpox.An alarming homophobic discourse on social media emerged, including the use of Twitter hashtags #gaypox, #fagpox, and #pridepox.Although the scapegoating of GBMSM is not new, 3 such homophobic discourse on the internet likely reinforces hateful stereotypes of GBMSM as diseased and deviant.When HIV was identified in the early 1980s, researchers called the virus GRID-gay-related immunodeficiency 4 -an expression of stigma that hampered an effective public health response.Forty years after the first diagnosis, stigma remains one of the most intractable challenges to fighting HIV. 5 This historical lens is crucial as we examine the mpox pandemic and the accompanying online homophobic discourse.Social media platforms can play a powerful role in spreading online hate, or aggressive and offensive language against a particular group (e.g., homophobic narratives).Online hate persists more visibly, commonly, and explicitly on the internet due to conditions of online anonymity and beliefs in ''digital freedom of speech'' that reduce social accountability. 6Social media platforms can also vicariously expose individuals to hateful content (e.g., racist or homophobic videos and photographs) and information that illuminates the systemic oppression (e.g., racism and homophobia) in Western societies.","journal":"LGBT Health","year":2023,"id":323279,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":37,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9601,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2023-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":863310,"name":"Chenglin Hong","orcid":"0000-0002-9652-388X","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1038601,"name":"Mehrab Beikzadeh","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1038025,"name":"Cory J.
