We conducted a qualitative, community-based participatory study to explore beliefs and attitudes about COVID-19 vaccines among young adults in Black/African American, Latinx, and Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Methods
We conducted six focus groups between June and August 2021. Participants were recruited by partnering with community-based organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Focus groups included Black/African American (N=13), Latinx (N=20), and AAPI (N=12) participants between 18 and 30 years of age. Emerging themes were identified using a modified Grounded Theory approach.
Results
Prominent themes among all three racial-ethnic groups included mistrust in medical and government institutions, strong conviction about self-agency in health decision-making, and exposure to a thicket of contradictory information and misinformation in social media. Social benefit and a sense of familial and societal responsibility were often mentioned as reasons to get vaccinated. Young adult mistrust had a generational flavor fueled by anger about increasing inequity, the profit-orientation of pharmaceutical companies and health institutions, society's failure to rectify injustice, and pessimism about life prospects.
Conclusion
Factors influencing vaccine readiness among Black/African American, Latinx, and AAPI young adults have a distinct generational and life-course texture. Outreach efforts should appeal to young adults' interest in family and social responsibility and the social benefits of vaccination, while being cognizant of the friction mandates pose for young adults' sense of self-agency. Efforts will be most effective coming from trusted messengers with a proven commitment to communities of color and health equity.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"36479186","pmcid":"PMC9712038","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5UL1TR001872-02","title":"Clinical and Translational Science Institute"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1089/heq.2022.0068","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5kf8h5sb","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/9712038","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC9712038","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC9712038?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36479186","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1089/heq.2022.0068","host_type":""},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/5f7c028b027b476bb07304463256ecd8","host_type":""},{"url":"https://escholarship.org/content/qt5kf8h5sb/qt5kf8h5sb.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1089/heq.2022.0068","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["0302 clinical medicine","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Young Adults","Disparities","Vaccine Hesitancy","Covid-19 Vaccination","Prevention (rcdc)","Social Determinants of Health","Coronaviruses","Coronaviruses Vaccines","Health Disparities (rcdc)","Clinical Research (rcdc)","Minority Health","Immunization (rcdc)","Original Research","Pediatric","42 Health Sciences (for-2020)","3 Good Health and Well Being (sdg)","Coronaviruses Disparities and At-Risk Populations","Health Disparities","4203 Health Services and Systems (for-2020)","Infectious Diseases","Vaccine Related (rcdc)","Minority Health (rcdc)","Public Health","Public aspects of medicine","RA1-1270","Behavioral and Social Science (rcdc)","Coronaviruses Vaccines (rcdc)","610","Emerging Infectious Diseases (rcdc)","Social Determinants of Health (rcdc)","Vaccine Related","Clinical Research","Health Services and Systems","Health Sciences","Behavioral and Social Science","4206 Public Health (for-2020)","Pediatric (rcdc)","Prevention","Coronaviruses (rcdc)","Coronaviruses Disparities and At-Risk Populations (rcdc)","Emerging Infectious Diseases","Good Health and Well Being","Infectious Diseases (rcdc)","Immunization"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
