Given that women have greater anxiety sensitivity (ie, fear of arousal-based body sensations) and anxiety sensitivity is inversely related to physical activity participation, this study sought to determine if anxiety sensitivity mediates gender differences in self-reported physical activity. Participants and methods: A sample of 802 post-secondary students completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 and a Lifestyles Questionnaire in September 2017. Results: Women reported significantly less physical activity and significantly greater anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity was significantly and inversely related to self-reported physical activity. A significant indirect effect of gender on physical activity via anxiety sensitivity was shown (B = 5.56, SE = 2.81, p < .05, 95% CI [1.31, 12.78], PM = .0843). Conclusions: Results suggest that anxiety sensitivity partially explains gender differences in physical activity. Anxiety sensitivity reduction interventions might increase physical activity participation and reduce the existing gender gap.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.7612001156935624,"endowment":3.7612001156935624,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"30645185","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2909715236","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Canada Research Chairs","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Government of Nova Scotia","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"University of Málaga","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Humanities Research Council of Canada.","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Canadian Institutes of Health Research","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Social Sciences","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"St. Francis Xavier University Jules Léger Chair","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":8,"fwci":3.2879,"citation_percentile":0.91138384,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2020,"count":3},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":6},{"year":2023,"count":10},{"year":2024,"count":12},{"year":2025,"count":5},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://doi.org/10.1080/policies-text-data-mining","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/07448481.2018.1549048","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full-xml/10.1080/07448481.2018.1549048","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1080/07448481.2018.1549048","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30645185","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Eating Disorders and Behaviors","Behavioral Health and Interventions","Physical Activity and Health"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Anxiety Disorders","Female","Humans","Male","Surveys and Questionnaires","Sex Factors","Students","Universities","Exercise","Young Adult"],"keywords":["Anxiety sensitivity","Anxiety","Physical activity","Arousal","Psychology","Clinical psychology","Physical activity level","Psychological intervention","Medicine","Physical therapy","Psychiatry","Social psychology","Gender Differences","Avoidance"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Gender equality"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-16T14:44:59.932949Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
