Pure tone thresholds and speech discrimination were studied in a follow-up examination on 500 patients using hearing aids unilaterally. The follow-up time ranged from 5 to 24 years. In average the same amount of deterioration was obtained in both ears. Deterioration in pure tone thresholds increased after the age of 80 years and speech discrimination after 65 years respectively. The results obtained gave no support to the concept of adult onset auditory deprivation in unaided ears.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.3862943611198906,"endowment":1.3862943611198906,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"11318475","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2160606419","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.1527,"citation_percentile":0.51148251,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/010503901300006985","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1080/010503901300006985","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11318475","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Hearing Loss and Rehabilitation","Hearing, Cochlea, Tinnitus, Genetics","Ear Surgery and Otitis Media","Aged","Aged, 80 and over","Audiometry, Pure-Tone","Follow-Up Studies","Hearing Aids","Hearing Loss, Sensorineural","Humans","Middle Aged","Sensitivity and Specificity","Severity of Illness Index","Speech Discrimination Tests"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Aged, 80 and over","Audiometry, Pure-Tone","Follow-Up Studies","Hearing Aids","Hearing Loss, Sensorineural","Humans","Middle Aged","Sensitivity and Specificity","Severity of Illness Index","Speech Discrimination Tests"],"keywords":["Audiology","Tone (literature)","Psychology","Pure tone","Medicine","Sensorineural hearing loss","Hearing loss"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Reduced inequalities"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-04T11:35:24.679790Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
