To gain more insights into the effects of these alterations, we created mice carrying a conditional deletion of the Apc tumor suppressor gene specifically in the renal epithelium. As expected, the loss of Apc leads to increased levels of beta-catenin protein in renal epithelium. Most of these mice die shortly after birth, and multiple kidney cysts were found upon histological examination. Only rarely did these animals survive to adulthood. Analysis of these adults revealed severely cystic kidneys associated with the presence of renal adenomas. Our results confirm an important role for proper regulation of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling in renal development and provide evidence that dysregulation of the pathway can initiate tumorigenesis in the kidney.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.890349128221754,"endowment":4.890349128221754,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15550389","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2080897556","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"DK-57328","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"DK-67565","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 DK042921","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"DK-42921","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"P50 DK057328","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDDK NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 DK067565","title":null}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":1.8165,"citation_percentile":0.84075818,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":11},{"year":2013,"count":6},{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":11},{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":5},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":8},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":5},{"year":2024,"count":2}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.jbc.org/article/S0021925820762666/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.jbc.org/article/S0021925820762666/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820762666?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820762666?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1074/jbc.M410697200","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1074/jbc.m410697200","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15550389","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Renal and related cancers","Genetic and Kidney Cyst Diseases","Renal cell carcinoma treatment"],"mesh_terms":["Adenoma","Animals","Cytoplasm","Cytoskeletal Proteins","Kidney Neoplasms","Kidney Tubules","Polycystic Kidney Diseases","Mice, Transgenic","Trans-Activators","Genes, APC","Integrases","Urothelium","Intercellular Signaling Peptides and Proteins","Wnt Proteins","beta Catenin","Mice"],"keywords":["Wnt signaling pathway","Kidney","Carcinogenesis","Renal stem cell","Biology","Epithelium","Kidney development","Catenin","Cancer research","Tumor suppressor gene","Pathology","Internal medicine","Endocrinology","Medicine","Signal transduction","Cell biology","Cancer","Gene","Genetics","Embryonic stem cell","Stem cell"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-12T10:10:48.002575Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
