In this work, a member of this family, SLC25A29, previously reported to be a mitochondrial carnitine/acylcarnitine- or ornithine-like carrier, has been thoroughly characterized biochemically. The SLC25A29 gene was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, and the gene product was purified and reconstituted in phospholipid vesicles. Its transport properties and kinetic parameters demonstrate that SLC25A29 transports arginine, lysine, homoarginine, methylarginine and, to a much lesser extent, ornithine and histidine. Carnitine and acylcarnitines were not transported by SLC25A29. This carrier catalyzed substantial uniport besides a counter-exchange transport, exhibited a high transport affinity for arginine and lysine, and was saturable and inhibited by mercurial compounds and other inhibitors of mitochondrial carriers to various degrees. The main physiological role of SLC25A29 is to import basic amino acids into mitochondria for mitochondrial protein synthesis and amino acid degradation.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.634728988229636,"endowment":4.634728988229636,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"24652292","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2004100670","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":3.0808,"citation_percentile":0.91391871,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":1},{"year":2015,"count":8},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":6},{"year":2018,"count":11},{"year":2019,"count":8},{"year":2020,"count":10},{"year":2021,"count":11},{"year":2022,"count":9},{"year":2023,"count":8},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":10},{"year":2026,"count":11}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.jbc.org/article/S0021925820388189/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.jbc.org/article/S0021925820388189/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820388189?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820388189?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1074/jbc.M114.547448","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1074/jbc.m114.547448","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24652292","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4036346","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/11586/155664","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Metabolism and Genetic Disorders","Mitochondrial Function and Pathology","Amino Acid Enzymes and Metabolism","Amino Acids, Basic","Biological Transport, Active","Carnitine Acyltransferases","Escherichia coli","Humans","Kinetics","Mitochondria","Mitochondrial Proteins","Recombinant Proteins"],"mesh_terms":["Biological Transport, Active","Carnitine Acyltransferases","Escherichia coli","Humans","Kinetics","Mitochondria","Recombinant Proteins","Mitochondrial Proteins","Amino Acids, Basic"],"keywords":["Mitochondrial carrier","Biochemistry","Amino acid","Mitochondrial matrix","Mitochondrion","Biology","Inner mitochondrial membrane","Solute carrier family","Cytosol","Membrane transport protein","Arginine","Gene","Escherichia coli","Bacterial outer membrane","Transporter","Enzyme","Amino Acid Transport","Basic Amino Acids","Liposomes","Mitochondrial Transport","Recombinant Protein Expression","Reconstitution of Membrane Transporters","SLC25 Family","SLC25A29"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-28T10:02:40.609013Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
