To determine whether CaR and Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) (mGluR1alpha and mGluR5) can form heterodimers, we immunoprecipitated CaR from bovine brain and observed co-precipitation of mGluR1alpha. CaR and mGluR1alpha co-localize in hippocampal and cerebellar neurons, but are expressed separately in other brain regions. In vitro transfection studies in HEK-293 cells established the specificity and disulfide-linked nature of the CaR:mGluR1alpha (CaR:mGluR5) interactions. CaR:mGluR1alpha (CaR:mGluR5) heterodimers exhibit altered trafficking via Homer 1c when compared with CaR:CaR homodimers. CaR becomes sensitive to glutamate-mediated internalization when present in CaR:mGluR1alpha heterodimers. These results demonstrate cross-family covalent heterodimerization of CaR with Group I mGluRs, and increase the potential role(s) for CaR in modulating neuronal function.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.049856007249537,"endowment":5.049856007249537,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"11489900","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2061602972","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"GM58578","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":2.0732,"citation_percentile":0.87072424,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":9},{"year":2013,"count":5},{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":8},{"year":2016,"count":7},{"year":2017,"count":6},{"year":2018,"count":8},{"year":2019,"count":8},{"year":2020,"count":10},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":4},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1074/jbc.m105662200","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1074/jbc.m105662200","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820741700?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0021925820741700?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1074/jbc.M105662200","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11489900","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://www.jbc.org/article/S0021925820741700/pdf","host_type":"Unpaywall"}],"fields_of_study":["Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research","Neural dynamics and brain function","Photoreceptor and optogenetics research"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Brain","Calcium","Calcium-Binding Proteins","Cattle","Cell Line","Cerebellum","Disulfides","Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay","Hippocampus","Humans","Microscopy, Fluorescence","Neurons","Precipitin Tests","Protein Binding","Transfection","Receptors, Metabotropic Glutamate","Dimerization","Rats"],"keywords":["Metabotropic glutamate receptor 1","Metabotropic glutamate receptor","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 6","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 7","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 2","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 3","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 8","Metabotropic receptor","Glutamate receptor","Metabotropic glutamate receptor 4","Chemistry","Cell biology","Neuroscience","Receptor","Biology","Biochemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T19:54:17.017969Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
