{"doi":"10.1073/pnas.2320334121","title":"Community Review Boards offer a path to research equity","abstract":"In academic medical research, institutional review boards (IRBs) are staffed with scientists, lawyers, and ethicists responsible for ensuring that research follows moral and legal principles.Although US Federal Regulation 45 CFR 46.107d requires IRBs to include at least one unaffiliated community member, more than this single voice is necessary to represent the public (1).IRBs are not designed to approve research on behalf of the communities being studied, and this model can lead to miscommunication and unethical practices. However, simply incorporating more community members into IRBs may not be an effective solution.Indeed, there are two significant barriers to broader com munity involvement in ethics committees: first, a reluctance on the part of unaffil iated members to participate and, second, a potentially intimidating atmosphere of committees dominated by professionals. To address these risks of hesitation and intimidation, we propose the establishment of Community Review Boards (CRBs), composed entirely of community members. In amplifying the public's voices, CRBs could help increase trust in the medical system and health outcomes for all.","journal":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences","year":2024,"id":467902,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":3,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.956,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":364568,"name":"Simar S.
