Seven multilevel studies demonstrate that the benefits of intergroup contact are broader than previously thought. Contact not only changes attitudes for individuals experiencing direct positive intergroup contact, their attitudes are also influenced by the behavior (and norms) of fellow ingroup members in their social context. Even individuals experiencing no direct, face-to-face intergroup contact can benefit from living in mixed settings where fellow ingroup members do engage in such contact. Two longitudinal studies rule out selection bias as an explanation for these findings on the contextual level. Prejudice is a function not only of whom you interact with, but also of where you live.</jats:p>","journal":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences","year":2014,"id":18959,"datarank":9.228048813648915,"base_score":5.926926025970411,"endowment":5.926926025970411,"self_citation_contribution":0.8890389038955617,"citation_network_contribution":8.339009909753353,"self_endowment_contribution":0.8890389038955617,"citer_contribution":8.339009909753353,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":374,"citer_count":200,"citers_with_citation_signal":200,"citers_with_endowment":200,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":129925,"name":"Katharina Schmid","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129926,"name":"Simon Lolliot","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129927,"name":"Hermann Swart","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129928,"name":"Dietlind Stolle","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129221,"name":"Nicole Tausch","orcid":null,"position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129929,"name":"Ananthi Al Ramiah","orcid":null,"position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":20878,"name":"Ulrich Wagner","orcid":"0000-0002-1751-5866","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129930,"name":"Steven Vertovec","orcid":null,"position":8,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129223,"name":"Miles Hewstone","orcid":null,"position":9,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":129924,"name":"Oliver Christ","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":5.926926025970411,"endowment":5.926926025970411,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"24591627","pmcid":"PMC3964129","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2167358219","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":89.388,"citation_percentile":0.99944113,"influential_citations":22,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":15},{"year":2016,"count":25},{"year":2017,"count":40},{"year":2018,"count":27},{"year":2019,"count":29},{"year":2020,"count":28},{"year":2021,"count":46},{"year":2022,"count":37},{"year":2023,"count":26},{"year":2024,"count":36},{"year":2025,"count":44},{"year":2026,"count":16}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"other-oa","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/111/11/3996.full.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/111/11/3996.full.pdf","host_type":"BRONZE"},{"url":"https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/111/11/3996.full.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.1073/pnas.1320901111","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1320901111","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24591627","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3964129","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/10023/4812","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Social and Intergroup Psychology","Electoral Systems and Political Participation","Racial and Ethnic Identity Research","Psychology","Medicine","Sociology","Cross-Sectional Studies","Humans","Interpersonal Relations","Longitudinal Studies","Models, Psychological","Prejudice","Social Behavior"],"mesh_terms":["Cross-Sectional Studies","Humans","Interpersonal Relations","Longitudinal Studies","Models, Psychological","Prejudice","Social Behavior"],"keywords":["Outgroup","Prejudice (legal term)","Ingroups and outgroups","Operationalization","Social psychology","Contact hypothesis","Psychology","Context (archaeology)","Association (psychology)","Contact theory","Social environment","Developmental psychology","Sociology","Geography","Diversity","TRUST","Multilevel Analysis","Social Norms"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Reduced inequalities"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-06-04T00:47:55.167413Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
