Main structural studies of viral fusion proteins, largely limited to X-ray crystallographic analysis for a long time, rely on cryo-electron microscopy nowadays, so the amount of high resolution data of spike protein is yet to growing up. The opportunity of applying computational methods for similarity detection between protein molecules for further analysis of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, based on these precise-enough data is considered in this paper. Biological background and the research problem definition are presented first, followed by a survey of protein structure comparison methods, which are reportedly used for studying SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
