A comparison of the spectral method, which requires a global basis set expansion of the wave functions, and the finite element method, which requires no such such expansion, is presented. A procedure is given for formulating the finite element approach and for achieving fast and accurate results. The convergence of the finite element calculations is considered and shown to be well behaved. A discussion of the extension of the finite element method to higher dimensions is also included.</jats:p>","journal":"The Journal of Chemical Physics","year":1980,"id":24375,"datarank":3.8522640305729787,"base_score":4.007333185232471,"endowment":4.007333185232471,"self_citation_contribution":0.6010999777848708,"citation_network_contribution":3.251164052788108,"self_endowment_contribution":0.6010999777848708,"citer_contribution":3.251164052788108,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":54,"citer_count":49,"citers_with_citation_signal":44,"citers_with_endowment":44,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":146452,"name":"Herschel Rabitz","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":146453,"name":"Attila Askar","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":146454,"name":"Ahmet Cakmak","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":146455,"name":"Mark Ablowitz","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":146451,"name":"Marc Duff","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":4.007333185232471,"endowment":4.007333185232471,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"24523987","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1989473560","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":4.8566,"citation_percentile":0.95269307,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://pubs.aip.org/aip/jcp/article-pdf/72/3/1543/18921184/1543_1_online.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1063/1.439381","host_type":"journal"}],"fields_of_study":["Quantum chaos and dynamical systems","Numerical methods for differential equations","Scientific Research and Discoveries","Chemistry","Physics"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Spectral element method","Finite element method","Extended finite element method","Finite element limit analysis","Mixed finite element method","Smoothed finite element method","hp-FEM","Convergence (economics)","Boundary knot method","Applied mathematics","Basis (linear algebra)","Mathematical analysis","Mathematics","Basis function","Element (criminal law)","Physics","Geometry","Boundary element method"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-06-07T22:16:22.901476Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
