{"doi":"10.1046/j.1365-2443.1999.00257.x","title":"Expression of the Vax family homeobox genes suggests multiple roles in eye development","abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title>Background</jats:title><jats:p>Homeobox gene products are thought to regulate target genes involved in the regional specification of tissues and organs. Several genes play roles in eye development.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>We isolated two new mouse homeobox genes, <jats:italic>Vax1</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Vax2,</jats:italic> expressed in retina primordium. The two genes share the same gene organization, consisting of three exons with predicted amino acid sequences identical in the homeodomain but diversified in other regions. At 9.5 days post coitum, both <jats:italic>Vax</jats:italic> genes were expressed in optic vesicles. At 11.5–14.5 dpc, <jats:italic>Vax1</jats:italic> became restricted to the optic stalk, while <jats:italic>Vax2</jats:italic> was expressed in the ventral half of the neural retina. Mapping of <jats:italic>Vax2</jats:italic> between D6Mit3 and D6Mit8 on chromosome 6 indicated a possible linkage with <jats:italic>Emx1</jats:italic>.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title><jats:p>The expression patterns of <jats:italic>Vax</jats:italic> genes suggest separate and specific involvement in eye development. <jats:italic>Vax1</jats:italic> may contribute to differentiation of the neuroretina, pigmented epithelium and optic stalk, while <jats:italic>Vax2</jats:italic> could function in the establishment of the dorso‐ventral axis of the retina and the visual system. The chromosomal location of <jats:italic>Vax2</jats:italic> suggests that <jats:italic>Vax2</jats:italic>‐<jats:italic>Emx1</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Vax1</jats:italic>‐<jats:italic>Emx2</jats:italic> arose by chromosome duplication of the same ancestral gene.</jats:p></jats:sec>","journal":"Genes to
