We demonstrate how engineering biomineralization for the synthesis of intrinsically hydrophilic and thus readily functionalizable AIS/Zn QDs with a quantum yield of 18% offers a 'green' and non-toxic materials platform for targeted bioimaging in sensitive cellular systems.
