The contribution of MUC1 overexpression to the malignant phenotype is, however, not known. In the present studies, we have stably expressed MUC1 in rat 3Y1 fibroblasts. MUC1-positive cells were selected from independent transfections. The results demonstrate that, as found in human carcinomas, MUC1 is expressed on the cell surface and as a complex with beta-catenin in the nucleus of the transfectants. Colony formation in soft agar demonstrates that cells expressing MUC1, but not the empty vector, exhibit anchorage-independent growth. The results also show that MUC1 expression confers tumor formation in nude mice. These findings provide the first evidence that MUC1 induces cellular transformation.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.267858159063328,"endowment":5.267858159063328,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"12955090","pmcid":"PMC4209839","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1994708622","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 CA097098","title":null},{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"CA97098","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":4.3351,"citation_percentile":0.95293341,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":14},{"year":2013,"count":14},{"year":2014,"count":11},{"year":2015,"count":8},{"year":2016,"count":5},{"year":2017,"count":5},{"year":2018,"count":5},{"year":2019,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":5},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":7},{"year":2024,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.springer.com/tdm","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/1206732.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/1206732","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/sj.onc.1206732","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12955090","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4209839","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Glycosylation and Glycoproteins Research","Monoclonal and Polyclonal Antibodies Research","Galectins and Cancer Biology","Animals","Antigens, Neoplasm","Biomarkers, Tumor","Carcinogenicity Tests","Cell Membrane","Cell Nucleus","Cytoskeletal Proteins","Fibroblasts","Gene Expression Regulation","Humans","Mice","Mice, Nude","Mucin-1","Oncogenes","Rats","Trans-Activators","Tumor Stem Cell Assay","beta Catenin"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Antigens, Neoplasm","Cell Membrane","Cell Nucleus","Cytoskeletal Proteins","Fibroblasts","Gene Expression Regulation","Humans","Mice, Nude","Oncogenes","Biomarkers, Tumor","Tumor Stem Cell Assay","Carcinogenicity Tests","Trans-Activators","Mucin-1","beta Catenin","Mice","Rats"],"keywords":["MUC1","Biology","Oncogene","Cancer research","Phenotype","Malignant transformation","Mucin","Glycoprotein","Carcinogenesis","Transformation (genetics)","Cell","Molecular biology","Cancer","Gene","Cell cycle","Genetics","Biochemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-27T16:08:03.960249Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
