Protein oxidation can have a role in the physiopathology of pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the protein oxidation in the aqueous humour and serum of cataract patients with and without PEX.
Methods
A multicenter study was carried out. Aqueous humour and serum samples were collected from patients who underwent routine cataract surgery. Patients were divided into PEX (n=29) and control (n=27) groups. Patients had no elevated intraocular pressure or glaucoma. Spectrophotometer was used to measure protein carbonyl (PC) levels in the samples.
Results
Mean PC concentration in the PEX aqueous (2.18+/-1.51 nmol/l) and serum (119.62+/-13.2 nmol/l) samples was significantly higher than that measured in the control aqueous (1.31+/-0.47 nmol/l) and serum (105.85+/-11.76 nmol/l) samples, respectively (P< 0.001).
Conclusion
The increased PC levels in the aqueous humour and serum of PEX patients suggest that protein oxidation may play a role in the physiopathology of PEX.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.5263605246161616,"endowment":3.5263605246161616,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"17293783","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2054231953","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.5847,"citation_percentile":0.72748323,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":6},{"year":2013,"count":2},{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2021,"count":3},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"http://www.springer.com/tdm","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/6702751.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/6702751.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/6702751.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/6702751","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/sj.eye.6702751","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17293783","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Glaucoma and retinal disorders","Retinal Diseases and Treatments","Connexins and lens biology","Aged","Aqueous Humor","Biomarkers","Case-Control Studies","Exfoliation Syndrome","Eye Proteins","Humans","Middle Aged","Oxidative Stress","Protein Carbonylation","Serum"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Aqueous Humor","Eye Proteins","Humans","Middle Aged","Biomarkers","Case-Control Studies","Exfoliation Syndrome","Oxidative Stress","Serum","Protein Carbonylation"],"keywords":["Pseudoexfoliation syndrome","Pseudoexfoliation","Aqueous humour","Pathophysiology","Medicine","Glaucoma","Aqueous solution","Aqueous humor","Oxidative stress","Internal medicine","Intraocular pressure","Chemistry","Ophthalmology","Endocrinology","Organic chemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Clean water and sanitation"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T03:09:31.329429Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
