Perceptual learning refers to performance improvements in perceptual tasks after practice or training in the task. It occurs in almost all visual tasks, ranging from simple feature detection to complex scene analysis. In this Review, we focus on key behavioral aspects of visual perceptual learning. We begin by describing visual perceptual learning tasks and manipulations that influence the magnitude of learning, and then discuss specificity of learning. Next, we present theories and computational models of learning and specificity. We then review applications of visual perceptual learning in visual rehabilitation. Finally, we summarize the general principles of visual perceptual learning, discuss the tension between plasticity and stability, and conclude with new research directions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.584967478670572,"endowment":4.584967478670572,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"37274562","pmcid":"PMC10237053","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4297323592","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NEI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 EY017491","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"9R01EY017491-05A1","title":"The Functions and Mechanisms of Perceptual Learning"}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":7.9456,"citation_percentile":0.98565097,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":14},{"year":2024,"count":33},{"year":2025,"count":28},{"year":2026,"count":19}],"oa_status":"green","license":"Springer TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10237053/pdf/nihms-1843140.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10237053/pdf/nihms-1843140.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/s44159-022-00107-2.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/s44159-022-00107-2","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/10237053","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s44159-022-00107-2","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37274562","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/22q3j1xv","host_type":""},{"url":"https://escholarship.org/content/qt22q3j1xv/qt22q3j1xv.pdf?t=ry0k76","host_type":"Unpaywall"},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1038/s44159-022-00107-2","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Visual perception and processing mechanisms","Tactile and Sensory Interactions","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","05 social sciences","0501 psychology and cognitive sciences"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Perceptual learning","Perception","Visual perception","Visual learning","Transfer of learning","Task (project management)","Cognitive psychology","Computer science","Psychology","Artificial intelligence","Neuroscience","1.2 Psychological and socioeconomic processes","Underpinning research","Behavioral and Social Science","Mental health","Eye Disease and Disorders of Vision"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Quality Education"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T05:51:20.155859Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
