The H5N1 ('bird flu') influenza A viruses, now circulating in Asia, Africa and Europe, are extremely virulent in humans, although they have not so far acquired the ability to transfer efficiently from human to human. These health concerns have spurred considerable interest in understanding the molecular biology of influenza A viruses. Recent structural studies of influenza A virus proteins (or fragments) help enhance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the viral proteins and the effects of drug resistance to improve drug design. The structures of domains of the influenza RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and the nonstructural NS1A protein provide opportunities for targeting these proteins to inhibit viral replication.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"20383144","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5U01AI074497-03","title":"Targeting the NS1 Protein for the Development of Influenza Virus Antivirals"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5R37AI011772-19","title":"REPLICATION OF INFLUENZA VIRUS"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1U54GM074958-01","title":"Sub-project 8"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1R43AI174497-01A1","title":"Development of a Staph Aureus Vaccine"}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Springer Nature TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/nsmb.1779.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/nsmb.1779","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/2957899","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/nsmb.1779","host_type":""},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc2957899?pdf=render","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20383144","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nsmb.1779","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Models, Molecular","Viral Proteins","Orthomyxoviridae Infections","Influenza A virus","Protein Conformation","Animals","Humans"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
