Classic studies showed that palmitoylation targets many signalling enzymes to specialized lipid microdomains on the cytosolic face of the plasma membrane, thereby directing their integration into specific transduction pathways. More recent work shows that palmitate reversibly modifies numerous classes of neuronal proteins, including neurotransmitter receptors, synaptic scaffolding proteins and secreted signalling molecules. This review highlights recent evidence that protein palmitoylation regulates trafficking and signalling pathways that are important for brain development and synaptic transmission.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.834810737062605,"endowment":5.834810737062605,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"12360323","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2096577768","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Canadian Institutes of Health Research","grant_id":"unidentified","title":"unidentified"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":5.9675,"citation_percentile":0.97383327,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":11},{"year":2013,"count":16},{"year":2014,"count":11},{"year":2015,"count":17},{"year":2016,"count":12},{"year":2017,"count":11},{"year":2018,"count":8},{"year":2019,"count":13},{"year":2020,"count":9},{"year":2021,"count":10},{"year":2022,"count":10},{"year":2023,"count":4},{"year":2024,"count":8},{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":4}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"Springer TDM","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/nrn940.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/nrn940","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/nrn940","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12360323","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nrn940","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Cellular transport and secretion","Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research","Lipid Membrane Structure and Behavior","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Axons","Brain","Humans","Ion Channels","Synaptic Transmission","Neurons","Palmitic Acids","Proteins","Receptor Aggregation","Signal Transduction","Amino Acid Motifs","Protein Transport"],"keywords":["Palmitoylation","Scaffold protein","Cell biology","Regulator","Signal transduction","Biology","Neurotransmission","Receptor","Biochemistry","Enzyme","Neurons","Amino Acid Motifs","Receptor Aggregation","Brain","Proteins","Palmitic Acids","Synaptic Transmission","Axons","Ion Channels","Protein Transport","Animals","Humans"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-29T22:10:36.670107Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
