Using in vivo electrophysiological recordings simultaneously with DA system manipulation in rats, we show that tonic and phasic DA release selectively modulates hippocampal and prefrontal cortical inputs through D1 and D2 receptors, respectively. In addition, we also found that D1 activation and D2 inactivation in the NAcc produced behaviorally selective effects (learning versus set shifting of response strategy) that correspond to specific afferents. These results suggest that the dynamics of DA release regulate the balance between limbic and cortical drive through activation and inactivation of DA receptor subtypes in the accumbens, and this regulates goal-directed behavior.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":6.380122536899765,"endowment":6.380122536899765,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15908948","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2031336666","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"MH57440","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":10.9613,"citation_percentile":0.9952338,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":40},{"year":2013,"count":27},{"year":2014,"count":31},{"year":2015,"count":28},{"year":2016,"count":25},{"year":2017,"count":30},{"year":2018,"count":29},{"year":2019,"count":26},{"year":2020,"count":24},{"year":2021,"count":20},{"year":2022,"count":27},{"year":2023,"count":13},{"year":2024,"count":21},{"year":2025,"count":12},{"year":2026,"count":6}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/nn1471","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/nn1471","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/nn1471.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/nn1471","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15908948","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Neurotransmitter Receptor Influence on Behavior","Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research","Memory and Neural Mechanisms","Animals","Behavior, Animal","Dopamine","Dopamine Agonists","Dopamine Antagonists","Goals","Hippocampus","Learning","Male","Motivation","Neural Pathways","Nucleus Accumbens","Prefrontal Cortex","Presynaptic Terminals","Rats","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","Receptors, Dopamine D1","Receptors, Dopamine D2","Synaptic Transmission"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Behavior, Animal","Dopamine","Goals","Hippocampus","Learning","Male","Motivation","Neural Pathways","Synaptic Transmission","Nucleus Accumbens","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","Prefrontal Cortex","Receptors, Dopamine D1","Receptors, Dopamine D2","Presynaptic Terminals","Dopamine Agonists","Dopamine Antagonists","Rats"],"keywords":["Nucleus accumbens","Neuroscience","Tonic (physiology)","Limbic system","Dopamine","Prefrontal cortex","Dopaminergic","Hippocampal formation","Psychology","Central nervous system"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-06T18:37:34.910112Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
