In contrast to this generally accepted view, we show that the transcription of genes temporally regulated during fly and worm development occurs in the absence of canonically active histone modifications. Conversely, strong chromatin marking is related to transcriptional and post-transcriptional stability, an association that we also observe in mammals. Our results support a model in which chromatin marking is associated with the stable production of RNA, whereas unmarked chromatin would permit rapid gene activation and deactivation during development. In the latter case, regulation by transcription factors would have a comparatively more important regulatory role than chromatin marks.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.532599493153256,"endowment":4.532599493153256,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"26280901","pmcid":"PMC4625605","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1171540079","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"European Research Council","grant_id":"294653","title":"Uncovering and understanding RNA through Massively Parallel Sequencing"},{"funder_name":"NHGRI NIH HHS","grant_id":"U24 HG007234","title":null},{"funder_name":"Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.","grant_id":"SFRH/BD/33535/2008","title":"PROGRAMA GRADUADO EM BIOLOGIA BÁSICA E APLICADA DA UNIVERSIDADE DO PORTO"},{"funder_name":"European Commission","grant_id":"277899","title":"Developing a global understanding of the PRC and NuRD complexes in stem cell differentiation, in health and disease"}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":5.5084,"citation_percentile":0.96669506,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":17},{"year":2017,"count":11},{"year":2018,"count":11},{"year":2019,"count":11},{"year":2020,"count":7},{"year":2021,"count":10},{"year":2022,"count":4},{"year":2023,"count":7},{"year":2024,"count":4},{"year":2025,"count":8},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"green","license":"other-oa","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/2445/126592","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4625605","host_type":"GREEN"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/2445/126592","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/ng.3381.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.nature.com/articles/ng.3381","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/ng.3381","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26280901","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2445/126592","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10230/41852","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4625605","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4625605","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4625605?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc4625605?pdf=render","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ng.3381","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ng.3381","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Genomics and Chromatin Dynamics","RNA Research and Splicing","Epigenetics and DNA Methylation","Medicine","Biology","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences","Alternative Splicing","Animals","Chromatin","Chromatin Immunoprecipitation","Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental","Histones","Humans","Polymerase Chain Reaction","RNA Processing, Post-Transcriptional","Transcription, Genetic"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Chromatin","Histones","Humans","RNA Processing, Post-Transcriptional","Transcription, Genetic","Polymerase Chain Reaction","Alternative Splicing","Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental","Chromatin Immunoprecipitation"],"keywords":["Chromatin","Biology","Histone","Drosophila melanogaster","Genetics","Gene","Regulation of gene expression","Transcription (linguistics)","Transcriptional regulation","Caenorhabditis elegans","ChIA-PET","Bivalent chromatin","Cell biology","Gene expression","Chromatin remodeling","Chromatin Immunoprecipitation","Transcription, Genetic","Cromatina -- Metabolisme","Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental","Regulació genètica -- Desenvolupament","Polymerase Chain Reaction","Histones","Alternative Splicing","Animals","Humans","RNA Processing, Post-Transcriptional"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
