In a potentiated startle response paradigm, a startle stimulus and a light conditioned stimulus (CS) were paired. A startle stimulus then was tested alone or following the CS. Freezing behavior was measured to index conditioned fear. The startle response was potentiated on CS trials, and rats froze more in CS than in non-CS periods. In Experiment 1, response to a previously habituated, weak startle stimulus was potentiated. In Experiment 2, response to the same stimulus used as the unconditioned stimulus (US) in training was potentiated. This CS-potentiated response retarded the course of response decrements over training sessions as compared with an explictly unpaired control group. Conditioned fear is a standard feature of this habituation paradigm, serves to potentiate the startle response, and provides an associative dimension lacking in the habituation process per se.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.382026634673881,"endowment":4.382026634673881,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"2398339","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2142094505","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.6078,"citation_percentile":0.84721899,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":6},{"year":2013,"count":1},{"year":2014,"count":3},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/xan/16/3/279.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1037/0097-7403.16.3.279","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2398339","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.500.8032","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Memory and Neural Mechanisms","Stress Responses and Cortisol","Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology Research"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Arousal","Association Learning","Conditioning, Classical","Fear","Habituation, Psychophysiologic","Learning","Male","Rats, Inbred Strains","Reflex, Startle","Rats"],"keywords":["Habituation","Startle response","Psychology","Fear-potentiated startle","Stimulus (psychology)","Classical conditioning","Moro reflex","Fear conditioning","Startle reaction","Measures of conditioned emotional response","Conditioned emotional response","Conditioning","Neutral stimulus","Prepulse inhibition","Neuroscience","Audiology","Unconditioned stimulus","Developmental psychology","Stimulus control","Reflex","Amygdala","Cognitive psychology","Medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-13T03:10:54.016541Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
