Daly was remarkably prescient when he chose the title <jats:italic>Igneous Rocks And The Depths Of The Earth</jats:italic> for his classic book, for this title could properly serve with minor qualification as an alternative title of the Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology (VGP) section of the 1983–1986 IUGG Quadrennial Report. Igneous rocks, their minerals, and their associated volatiles continue to be the major focus of research aimed at describing and deciphering compositional variation at all scales within the earth from the mantle to magma chambers to lava flows. Even where igneous rocks and processes are not the primary focus of research, such as in studies of ore deposits and metamorphic terrains, igneous activity is frequently invoked to supply metals and/or heat. Not surprisingly, then, this section of the Quadrennial Report is weighted heavily towards igneous rocks and processes.
