When operated as a single-stage reactor this removed more than 60% of influent phosphate from primary settled sewage at a pH of 6.0, as opposed to approximately 30% at the typical operational pH for the works of 7.0-7.3-yet without any deleterious effect on other treatment parameters. At these pH values the phosphorus content of the sludge was, respectively, 4.2% and 2.0%. At pH 6.0 some 33.9% of sludge microbial cells were observed to contain polyphosphate inclusions; the corresponding value at pH 7.0 was 18.7%. Such a process may serve as a prototype for the development of alternative biological and chemical options for phosphate removal from wastewaters.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.007333185232471,"endowment":4.007333185232471,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"16433364","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2042899294","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council","grant_id":"EP/C000897/1","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":0.5492,"citation_percentile":0.6665237,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":4},{"year":2013,"count":5},{"year":2014,"count":8},{"year":2015,"count":3},{"year":2016,"count":4},{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":6},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/es0509782","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1021/es0509782","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16433364","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://www.scopus.com/inward/record.url?scp=30344456409&partnerID=8YFLogxK","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Wastewater Treatment and Nitrogen Removal","Phosphorus and nutrient management","Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment"],"mesh_terms":["Aerobiosis","Hydrogen-Ion Concentration","Phosphates","Polyphosphates","Sewage","Waste Disposal, Fluid","Bioreactors"],"keywords":["Polyphosphate","Enhanced biological phosphorus removal","Phosphate","Phosphorus","Activated sludge","Chemistry","Sewage treatment","Sewage","Sewage sludge","Pulp and paper industry","Wastewater","Pilot plant","Environmental chemistry","Waste management","Environmental science","Environmental engineering","Biochemistry","Organic chemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Clean water and sanitation"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-04T16:28:27.512666Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
