{"doi":"10.1017/s0033291798006667","title":"Development of the World Health Organization WHOQOL-BREF \nQuality of Life Assessment","abstract":"<jats:p><jats:bold>Background.</jats:bold> The paper reports on the development of the\n \nWHOQOL-BREF, an abbreviated version of the WHOQOL-100 quality of life assessment.</jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Method.</jats:bold> The WHOQOL-BREF was derived from data collected using\n the WHOQOL-100. It \nproduces scores for four domains related to quality of life: \nphysical health, psychological, social \nrelationships and environment. It also includes one facet on overall \nquality of life and general health.</jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Results.</jats:bold> Domain scores produced by the WHOQOL-BREF correlate\n \nhighly (0·89 or above) with \nWHOQOL-100 domain scores (calculated on a four domain structure). WHOQOL-BREF\n domain \nscores demonstrated good discriminant validity, content validity, \ninternal consistency and test–retest reliability.</jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Conclusion.</jats:bold> These data suggest that the WHOQOL-BREF provides\n \na valid and reliable alternative \nto the assessment of domain profiles using the WHOQOL-100. It is envisaged\n that the \nWHOQOL-BREF will be most useful in studies that require a brief assessment\n \nof quality of life, for example, \nin large epidemiological studies and clinical trials where quality of \nlife is of interest.
