{"doi":"10.1016/j.xjon.2021.05.021","title":"The opioid epidemic and endocarditis: Frontiers in the management of injection drug use–related endocarditis","abstract":"The opioid epidemic in the United States is accompanied by the increasing incidence of injection drug use–related infective endocarditis (IDU-IE).1,2 Cardiac surgeons are increasingly faced with this complex patient population, with one-third of valve operations for endocarditis related to drug use.1,3 The technical challenges of operative management are compounded by the complexities surrounding the decision to offer the operation to patients with IDU-IE.
