Recently, A-to-I editing was found to occur frequently in the human transcriptome. In this article, we show that the frequency of A-to-I editing in humans is at least an order of magnitude higher than in the mouse, rat, chicken or fly genomes. The extraordinary frequency of RNA editing in human is explained by the dominance of the primate-specific Alu element in the human transcriptome, which increases the number of double-stranded RNA substrates.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.9344739331306915,"endowment":4.9344739331306915,"datacite_reuse_total":7,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15661352","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2119688233","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":3.9737,"citation_percentile":0.94647935,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":10},{"year":2013,"count":8},{"year":2014,"count":9},{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":4},{"year":2017,"count":7},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":5},{"year":2023,"count":9},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"green","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/q-bio/0412043","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/q-bio/0412043","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0168952504003324?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0168952504003324?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://arxiv.org/abs/q-bio/0412043","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tig.2004.12.005","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.333.1109","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["RNA regulation and disease","CRISPR and Genetic Engineering","Cytomegalovirus and herpesvirus research","3' Untranslated Regions","Adenosine","Alu Elements","Animals","Chickens","Computational Biology","Drosophila","Genome","Genome, Human","Humans","Inosine","Primates","RNA Editing","RNA, Double-Stranded","RNA, Messenger","Rats"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Chickens","Primates","Humans","Rats","Drosophila","RNA, Double-Stranded","RNA, Messenger","3' Untranslated Regions","Adenosine","Inosine","Computational Biology","RNA Editing","Alu Elements","Genome","Genome, Human"],"keywords":["RNA editing","Biology","Alu element","Transcriptome","RNA","Genome","Genetics","Human genome","Primate","Computational biology","Dominance (genetics)","Evolutionary biology","Gene","Gene expression","Neuroscience"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722347.v1","title":"Additional file 1 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722347","title":"Additional file 1 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722353.v1","title":"Additional file 3 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722353","title":"Additional file 3 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722350.v1","title":"Additional file 2 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Dataset"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.23722350","title":"Additional file 2 of L-GIREMI uncovers RNA editing sites in long-read RNA-seq","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Dataset"},{"doi":"10.48550/arxiv.q-bio/0412043","title":"Is abundant A-to-I RNA editing primate-specific?","publisher":"arXiv","resource_type":"Text"}],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-16T00:57:33.338288Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
