Our study proposes a novel counterfactual decomposition method to estimate the contribution of each component to changing sorting outcomes in marriages. Findings indicate rising educational homogamy, an increase in non-traditional unions in which women partner 'down' in education, and a decline in traditional unions. Decomposition results suggest that these trends are predominantly attributable to changes in women's and men's educational attainment. Furthermore, changes in the educational gradient in marrying contributed to rising homogamy and the decline in traditional unions, a fact largely overlooked in previous research. Although assortative mating has also undergone changes, they barely contribute to trends in sorting outcomes.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.772588722239781,"endowment":2.772588722239781,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"36797003","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4318217980","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Trinity College Dublin","grant_id":"unidentified","title":"unidentified"},{"funder_name":"Trinity College Dublin","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":10.425,"citation_percentile":0.98342955,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":5}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ssresearch.2023.102846","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ssresearch.2023.102846","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0049089X23000017?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0049089X23000017?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36797003","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/kj68u","host_type":""},{"url":"https://osf.io/kj68u/download","host_type":""},{"url":"https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/kj68u","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Family Dynamics and Relationships","Demographic Trends and Gender Preferences","Gender, Labor, and Family Dynamics","05 social sciences","0506 political science","0504 sociology"],"mesh_terms":["Educational Status","Employment","Female","Humans","Ireland","Male","Marriage","Reproduction"],"keywords":["Assortative mating","Educational attainment","Microdata (statistics)","Counterfactual thinking","Demographic economics","Irish","Microsimulation","Demography","Census","Geography","Economics","Sociology","Psychology","Population","Economic growth","Social psychology","Decomposition","Census Data","Educational Expansion","Educational Gradient In Marriage","Male","Employment","bepress|Social and Behavioral Sciences|Sociology|Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence","SocArXiv|Social and Behavioral Sciences|Sociology|Family","Reproduction","bepress|Social and Behavioral Sciences|Sociology","SocArXiv|Social and Behavioral Sciences|Sociology","bepress|Social and Behavioral Sciences","Humans","Educational Status","Female","SocArXiv|Social and Behavioral Sciences","Marriage","Ireland"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":4,"sdg_label":"4.
