However, most previous research has focused on the metabolic reactions in host tissues, the gut microbiota-mediated biotransformation of environmental compounds is understudied. Using triclocarban (TCC) as a model environmental compound, here we study the metabolic fate of TCC in gut tissues and determine the roles of gut microbiota involved. We find that compared with other tissues, the colon tissue has a unique metabolic profile of TCC, with high abundance of the parent compound TCC and its free-form metabolites. Using a variety of approaches including antibiotic-mediated suppression of gut bacteria in vivo, germ-free mice, and in vitro culture of fecal bacteria, we found that the unique metabolic profile of TCC in the colon is mediated by the actions of gut microbiota. Overall, our findings support that gut microbiota plays important roles in colonic metabolism of TCC, highlighting the importance to consider the contributions of gut microbiota in toxicology evaluation of environmental compounds.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.9444389791664403,"endowment":2.9444389791664403,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"34004538","pmcid":"PMC8192447","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3162572240","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIEHS NIH HHS","grant_id":"R21 ES023371","title":null},{"funder_name":"University Grants Committee Research Grants Council","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institute of Food and Agriculture","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":1.1107,"citation_percentile":0.76369457,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":5},{"year":2025,"count":3}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"http://www.elsevier.com/open-access/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/am/pii/S0048969721027480","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/am/pii/S0048969721027480","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0048969721027480?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0048969721027480?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.147677","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34004538","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5xf525r7","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/8192447","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Gut microbiota and health","Pharmacogenetics and Drug Metabolism","Effects and risks of endocrine disrupting chemicals"],"mesh_terms":["Gastrointestinal Microbiome","Animals","Carbanilides","Colon","Feces","Mice"],"keywords":["Gut flora","Triclocarban","Microbial metabolism","Biology","Environmental toxicology","Microbiology","Metabolic pathway","Distal colon","Xenobiotic","Bacteria","Metabolism","In vivo","Biotransformation","Gut bacteria","Chemistry","Biochemistry","Triclosan","Toxicity","Medicine","Enzyme","Pathology","Gut Microbiota","Triclocarban (Tcc)"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[{"name":"nct"},{"name":"doi"}],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-06T19:00:12.163095Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
