Recent analyses have resolved relationships and demonstrated that some components of the land plant developmental genetic toolkit have their origin in algal ancestors. Phylogenetic grades of taxa imply long independent evolutionary histories, with extant species diversity potentially relictual and highly derived morphologically, making reconstruction of ancestral states problematic.
