Here we determined seroprevalence and risk factors of T. gondii infection in dogs from Andalusia (Southern Spain) and Ceuta (Northern Africa). Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 235 out of 769 dogs (30.6%; CI95%: 27.3-33.8) by the modified agglutination test (MAT, cut-off of 1:25) with titers of 1:25 in 91, 1:50 in 43, 1:100 in 84, and ≥1:500 in 17 dogs. The main risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in dogs were age (higher seroprevalence in older dogs), hunter activity and size (higher seroprevalence in larger and medium dogs). This is the first study on T. gondii infection in pet dogs from Spain and Ceuta. The results indicate that T. gondii is widespread in dogs in mainland Spain and Ceuta, which might have important implications for public health.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.2188758248682006,"endowment":3.2188758248682006,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"27155133","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2346237506","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Andalusia Council of Official Veterinary Schools","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":2.187,"citation_percentile":0.85020405,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":4},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1383576916300356?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1383576916300356?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.parint.2016.05.001","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27155133","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Toxoplasma gondii Research Studies","Parasitic Infections and Diagnostics","Rabies epidemiology and control","Africa, Northern","Agglutination Tests","Animals","Antibodies, Protozoan","Dog Diseases","Dogs","Female","Male","Public Health","Risk Factors","Seroepidemiologic Studies","Spain","Toxoplasma","Toxoplasmosis, Animal"],"mesh_terms":["Africa, Northern","Agglutination Tests","Animals","Antibodies, Protozoan","Dog Diseases","Dogs","Female","Male","Public Health","Risk Factors","Spain","Toxoplasma","Toxoplasmosis, Animal","Seroepidemiologic Studies"],"keywords":["Seroprevalence","Toxoplasma gondii","Direct agglutination test","Titer","Veterinary medicine","Antibody","Medicine","Biology","Virology","Immunology","Serology","Dogs","risk factors"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T22:06:36.182396Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
