Like drug addiction, non-drug addictions manifest in symptoms including craving, impaired control over the behavior, tolerance, withdrawal, and high rates of relapse. These alterations in behavior suggest that plasticity may be occurring in brain regions associated with drug addiction. In this review, I summarize data demonstrating that exposure to non-drug rewards can alter neural plasticity in regions of the brain that are affected by drugs of abuse. Research suggests that there are several similarities between neuroplasticity induced by natural and drug rewards and that, depending on the reward, repeated exposure to natural rewards might induce neuroplasticity that either promotes or counteracts addictive behavior.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.84354441703136,"endowment":5.84354441703136,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21459101","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2045365443","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"K99 DA026994","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"R00 DA026994","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIDA NIH HHS","grant_id":"DA026994","title":null}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":6.1075,"citation_percentile":0.97921862,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":10},{"year":2013,"count":9},{"year":2014,"count":34},{"year":2015,"count":18},{"year":2016,"count":24},{"year":2017,"count":24},{"year":2018,"count":21},{"year":2019,"count":21},{"year":2020,"count":66},{"year":2021,"count":26},{"year":2022,"count":31},{"year":2023,"count":12},{"year":2024,"count":19},{"year":2025,"count":19},{"year":2026,"count":6}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0028390811001195?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0028390811001195?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuropharm.2011.03.010","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21459101","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3139704","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Neurotransmitter Receptor Influence on Behavior","Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder","Neural and Behavioral Psychology Studies","Animals","Behavior, Addictive","Brain","Exercise","Exploratory Behavior","Food","Humans","Neuronal Plasticity","Neurons","Reinforcement, Psychology","Reward","Sexual Behavior","Sexual Behavior, Animal"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Brain","Exploratory Behavior","Food","Humans","Neuronal Plasticity","Neurons","Reinforcement, Psychology","Reward","Sexual Behavior","Sexual Behavior, Animal","Exercise","Behavior, Addictive"],"keywords":["Addiction","Neuroplasticity","Craving","Psychology","Substance abuse","Drug","Neuroscience","Psychiatry"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T07:16:46.585537Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
