But new experiences are also integrated into existing memories, indicating plasticity. In the hippocampus, spatial representations are known to remain stable but have also been shown to drift over long periods of time. We hypothesized that experience, more than the passage of time, is the driving force behind representational drift. We compared the within-day stability of place cells' representations in dorsal CA1 of the hippocampus of mice traversing two similar, familiar tracks for different durations. We found that the more time the animals spent actively traversing the environment, the greater the representational drift, regardless of the total elapsed time between visits. Our results suggest that spatial representation is a dynamic process, related to the ongoing experiences within a specific context, and is related to memory update rather than to passive forgetting.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.442651256490317,"endowment":4.442651256490317,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"37315557","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4380489692","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation","grant_id":"R01 MH125544-01","title":null},{"funder_name":"German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development","grant_id":"GIF I-1477-421.13/2018","title":null},{"funder_name":"HFSP","grant_id":"RGP0017/2021","title":null},{"funder_name":"Israel Science Foundation","grant_id":"2655/18","title":null},{"funder_name":"Israel Science Foundation","grant_id":"2183/21","title":null},{"funder_name":"Israel Science Foundation","grant_id":"1442/21","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 MH125544","title":null},{"funder_name":"University of Michigan","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":8,"fwci":11.0453,"citation_percentile":0.99289213,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2023,"count":22},{"year":2024,"count":26},{"year":2025,"count":21},{"year":2026,"count":15}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://www.elsevier.com/open-access/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627323003872?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627323003872?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2023.05.014","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37315557","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Neural dynamics and brain function","Memory and Neural Mechanisms","Photoreceptor and optogenetics research","Mice","Animals","Hippocampus","Mental Recall","Place Cells","Gravitation"],"mesh_terms":["Place Cells","Animals","Gravitation","Hippocampus","Mental Recall","Mice"],"keywords":["Dorsum","Neuroscience","Psychology","Communication","Biology","Anatomy","Hippocampus","CA1","Place Cells","Remapping","Reconsolidation","Representational Drift","One-photon Ca2+ Imaging"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Reduced inequalities"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T18:42:19.943742Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
