However, BMIs also represent a powerful tool to address fundamental questions in neuroscience. The observed subjects of BMI experiments can also be considered as indirect observers of their own neurophysiological activity, and the relationship between observed neurons and (artificial) behavior can be genuinely causal rather than indirectly correlative. These two characteristics defy the classical object-observer duality, making BMIs particularly appealing for investigating how information is encoded and decoded by neural circuits in real time, how this coding changes with physiological learning and plasticity, and how it is altered in pathological conditions. Within neuroengineering, BMI is like a tree that opens its branches into many traditional engineering fields, but also extends deep roots into basic neuroscience beyond neuroprosthetics.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.867534450455582,"endowment":4.867534450455582,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25856486","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2147445724","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Science Foundation","grant_id":"1402984","title":"Sources of adaptation during BMI control"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":6.8333,"citation_percentile":0.97691001,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":5},{"year":2016,"count":12},{"year":2017,"count":18},{"year":2018,"count":11},{"year":2019,"count":13},{"year":2020,"count":15},{"year":2021,"count":13},{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":13},{"year":2024,"count":10},{"year":2025,"count":8},{"year":2026,"count":4}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Elsevier Non-Commercial","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0896627315002603/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0896627315002603/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627315002603?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627315002603?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2015.03.036","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25856486","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2015.03.036","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2015.03.036","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["EEG and Brain-Computer Interfaces","Neuroscience and Neural Engineering","Neural dynamics and brain function","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Brain","Humans","Neurons","Neural Prostheses","Brain-Computer Interfaces"],"keywords":["Neuroprosthetics","Neural engineering","Neuroscience","Connectomics","Computer science","Brain–computer interface","Neurophysiology","Neural decoding","Systems neuroscience","Artificial intelligence","Cognitive science","Human–computer interaction","Psychology","Functional connectivity","Decoding methods","Connectome","Electroencephalography","Neurons","Neural Prostheses","Neuroscience(all)","Brain-Computer Interfaces","Animals","Brain","Humans"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":11,"sdg_label":"11.
