Here, we show that neurons in the primate caudate nucleus and ventral striatum modulate their activity according to temporally discounted values of rewards with a similar time course. However, neurons in the caudate nucleus encoded the difference in the temporally discounted values of the two alternative targets more reliably than neurons in the ventral striatum. In contrast, neurons in the ventral striatum largely encoded the sum of the temporally discounted values, and therefore, the overall goodness of available options. These results suggest a more pivotal role for the dorsal striatum in action selection during intertemporal choice.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.247024072160486,"endowment":5.247024072160486,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21220107","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2088386233","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5P01NS048328-05","title":"Interactions in the Corticostriatal Network"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1RL1DA024855-01","title":"Stress, Prefrontal Cortex, and Decision Making (#4 of 14)"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5P30EY000785-23","title":"VISION RESEARCH"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":7.6577,"citation_percentile":0.98147512,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":20},{"year":2013,"count":16},{"year":2014,"count":16},{"year":2015,"count":11},{"year":2016,"count":12},{"year":2017,"count":11},{"year":2018,"count":12},{"year":2019,"count":15},{"year":2020,"count":15},{"year":2021,"count":13},{"year":2022,"count":6},{"year":2023,"count":13},{"year":2024,"count":6},{"year":2025,"count":9},{"year":2026,"count":4}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":"Elsevier Non-Commercial","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0896627310009839/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.cell.com/article/S0896627310009839/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627310009839?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0896627310009839?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2010.11.041","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21220107","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3034314","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2010.11.041","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2010.11.041","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Neural and Behavioral Psychology Studies","Neurotransmitter Receptor Influence on Behavior","Memory and Neural Mechanisms","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Action Potentials","Animals","Basal Ganglia","Caudate Nucleus","Choice Behavior","Macaca mulatta","Male","Models, Psychological","Neurons","Neuropsychological Tests","Photic Stimulation","Reward","Time Factors","Visual Perception"],"keywords":["Striatum","Ventral striatum","Dorsum","Neuroscience","Caudate nucleus","Basal ganglia","Intertemporal choice","Predictive coding","Action selection","Psychology","Biology","Coding (social sciences)","Dopamine","Anatomy","Central nervous system","Economics","Microeconomics","Mathematics","Male","Neurons","Time Factors","Neuroscience(all)","Action Potentials","Models, Psychological","Neuropsychological Tests","Choice Behavior","Macaca mulatta","Reward","Visual Perception","Animals","Photic Stimulation"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T04:29:52.416334Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
