The present study aimed to investigate the separate and combined effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (F3) regions on pain relief in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from NP.
Methods
The statistical population of this double-blind randomized clinical trial consisted of all the members of the Bonab Diabetes Association in 2022 aged 45 to 65 years who were diagnosed with NP by a specialist. A total of 48 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected as the sample through purposive sampling. The participants were then randomly assigned into 4 groups, each attending 12 sessions of a special intervention (three times a week). The Short Form-McGill Pain Questionnaire-2 (SF-MPQ-2) was used for data collection. Data were statistically analyzed using SPANOVA, analysis of covariance, and the Bonferroni test.
Results
The results showed that tDCS had the potential to induce pain relief in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from NP (F = 11.48, P < 0.001). The mean perceived pain intensity in the posttest was lower in the M1 stimulation group than in the F3 stimulation group. Nevertheless, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of perceived pain intensity in the one-month and two-month follow-up stages.
Conclusions
The tDCS approach (over both M1 and F3) showed promising effects for pain management in patients with type-2 diabetes suffering from NP and may be an effective add-on treatment. However, more trials with larger sample sizes are necessary to define clinically relevant effects.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.4849066497880004,"endowment":2.4849066497880004,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"37951301","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4388572139","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.1886,"citation_percentile":0.79607557,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://doi.org/10.15223/policy-004","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030439402300513X?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030439402300513X?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neulet.2023.137554","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37951301","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Studies","Pain Management and Treatment","Pain Mechanisms and Treatments","Humans","Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2","Double-Blind Method","Neuralgia","Pain Management","Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation","Middle Aged","Aged"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2","Double-Blind Method","Humans","Middle Aged","Neuralgia","Pain Management","Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation"],"keywords":["Transcranial direct-current stimulation","Medicine","Neuropathic pain","Population","McGill Pain Questionnaire","Physical therapy","Type 2 diabetes","Chronic pain","Analysis of variance","Randomized controlled trial","Diabetes mellitus","Anesthesia","Stimulation","Internal medicine","Visual analogue scale","Endocrinology","Motor cortex","Diabetes","Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex","Tdcs"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-09T12:41:07.097897Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
