Recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies on twins have increased our knowledge of the extent to which genes, the environment and their interactions shape inter-individual brain variability. The present review draws from highly salient MRI studies in young twin samples to provide a robust assessment of the heritability of structural and functional brain changes during development. The available studies suggest that (as with many other traits), global brain morphology and network organization are highly heritable from early childhood to young adulthood. Conversely, genetic correlations among brain regions exhibit heterogeneous trajectories, and this heterogeneity reflects the progressive, experience-related increase in brain network complexity. Studies also support the key role of environment in mediating brain network differentiation via changes of genetic expression and hormonal levels. Thus, rest- and task-related functional brain circuits seem to result from a contextual and dynamic expression of heritability.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.6635616461296463,"endowment":3.6635616461296463,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"31911159","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2998261935","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Fondazione Cariplo","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Ministero della Salute","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":2.5739,"citation_percentile":0.90052918,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":5},{"year":2022,"count":13},{"year":2023,"count":6},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":3},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0149763419306700?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0149763419306700?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neubiorev.2020.01.003","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31911159","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/11311/1207018","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Functional Brain Connectivity Studies","Advanced Neuroimaging Techniques and Applications","Advanced MRI Techniques and Applications"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Brain","Child","Child, Preschool","Humans","Human Development","Infant","Nerve Net","Twin Studies as Topic","Young Adult","Gene-Environment Interaction","Neuroimaging"],"keywords":["Brain morphometry","Brain Structure and Function","Twin study","Heritability","Vulnerability (computing)","Brain size","Neuroscience","Psychology","Human brain","Cognition","Functional magnetic resonance imaging","Developmental psychology","Neuroimaging","Brain function","Brain development","Biology","Magnetic resonance imaging","Evolutionary biology","Medicine","Neurodevelopment","Diffusion Tensor Imaging","Gene-environment","Imaging-genetics","Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Twin Modeling"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Responsible consumption and production"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-27T16:00:55.912346Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
