All kinds of MSCs are genomic stable and have the self-renewal ability. Main sources of MSCs are bone marrow, adipose tissues, umbilical cord and placental tissues. MSCs can be cultured in many undifferentiated passages to grow into more specialized cells, produce secretory factors and also support trophic functions in the body. Exosomes, derived from MSCs also have great potential in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Exosomes are secreted by MSCs and have the same therapeutic potential as their parent cells. MSCs and their exosomes combined with biomaterials can also be more effective in promoting the regeneration of tissues and organs. However, for use of MSCs-exosomes as a clinical agent different MSCs-exosomes have been manufactured and their therapeutics effects demonstrated in clinical studies. But there are still many characteristics which are unknown and many barriers still need to be conquered. In this review, we not only highlighted the characteristics of human MSCs and their exosomes, but also provided their latest therapeutic strategies in regenerative medicine.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.3706380281276624,"endowment":5.3706380281276624,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"32585248","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3037705713","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"China Postdoctoral Science Foundation","grant_id":"2019M660166","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"31700708","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"81503007","title":null},{"funder_name":"Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province","grant_id":"BK20170181","title":null},{"funder_name":"Top-notch Academic Programs Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions","grant_id":"PPZY2015B146","title":null}],"total_grants":5,"fwci":8.6485,"citation_percentile":0.98726453,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2020,"count":7},{"year":2021,"count":24},{"year":2022,"count":50},{"year":2023,"count":34},{"year":2024,"count":50},{"year":2025,"count":38},{"year":2026,"count":11}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://doi.org/10.15223/policy-004","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0024320520307529?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0024320520307529?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lfs.2020.118002","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32585248","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Extracellular vesicles in disease","Mesenchymal stem cell research","Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine","Adult Stem Cells","Animals","Cell Differentiation","Exosomes","Humans","Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation","Mesenchymal Stem Cells","Regenerative Medicine","Tissue Engineering"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Cell Differentiation","Humans","Tissue Engineering","Regenerative Medicine","Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation","Adult Stem Cells","Exosomes","Mesenchymal Stem Cells"],"keywords":["Microvesicles","Mesenchymal stem cell","Regenerative medicine","Regeneration (biology)","Cell biology","Stem cell","Biology","Umbilical cord","Adipose tissue","Tissue engineering","Immunology","Medicine","Cancer research","microRNA","Differentiation","Wound healing","Bone regeneration","MSCs","Exosomes"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T23:30:06.328416Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
