Regulations of gene expression including translation modulations are critical for adaptation and survival under stress. Untranslated regions (UTRs) of the transcripts play significant roles in translation regulation and continue to raise many intriguing questions in our understanding of cellular stress physiology. IRES (Internal ribosome entry site) and uORF (upstream open reading frame) mediated alternative translation initiations are emerging as unique mechanisms. Recent studies have revealed novel means of mRNAs stabilization in stress granules and their reversible modifications. Differential regulation of select transcripts is possible by the interplay between the adenine/uridine-rich elements (AREs) in 3'UTR with their binding proteins (AUBP) and by microRNA-mediated effects. Coordination of these various mechanisms control translation and thereby enables appropriate responses to environmental stress. In this review, we focus on the role of sequence signatures both at 5' and 3'UTRs in translation reprogramming during cellular stress responses.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.58351893845611,"endowment":3.58351893845611,"datacite_reuse_total":8,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"28343578","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2588114627","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.2164,"citation_percentile":0.77746071,"influential_citations":1,"citation_trend":[{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":4},{"year":2019,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":11},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":5},{"year":2025,"count":4}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030645651630393X?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S030645651630393X?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtherbio.2017.02.006","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28343578","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["RNA modifications and cancer","RNA and protein synthesis mechanisms","RNA Research and Splicing","Biology","Medicine"],"mesh_terms":["Internal Ribosome Entry Sites","Animals","Gene Expression Regulation","Humans","RNA, Messenger","Stress, Physiological","Protein Biosynthesis","5' Untranslated Regions","3' Untranslated Regions"],"keywords":["Internal ribosome entry site","Translation (biology)","Biology","Untranslated region","Five prime untranslated region","Reprogramming","Upstream open reading frame","Integrated stress response","Translational regulation","Stress granule","Open reading frame","Cellular stress response","Cell biology","Three prime untranslated region","microRNA","Computational biology","Eukaryotic translation","Genetics","Messenger RNA","Gene","Fight-or-flight response","Peptide sequence","Stress responses","Stress Granules","Translation Regulation","Rna Motifs"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Life in Land"}],"linked_datasets":[{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969246.v1","title":"Additional file 1 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969246","title":"Additional file 1 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969249.v1","title":"Additional file 2 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969249","title":"Additional file 2 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969252.v1","title":"Additional file 3 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969252","title":"Additional file 3 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"JournalArticle"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969258","title":"Additional file 4 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Dataset"},{"doi":"10.6084/m9.figshare.16969258.v1","title":"Additional file 4 of A novel adenylate isopentenyltransferase 5 regulates shoot branching via the ATTTA motif in Camellia sinensis","publisher":"figshare","resource_type":"Dataset"}],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-05T15:10:03.906197Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
