Recently, cell-cell communications or interactions among these cells have been considered to play an important role to cancer initiation, promotion, and progression. In particular, intratumoral fibroblasts are well known as cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF). CAF is considered to be different from normal fibroblasts in terms of promoting cancer progression through the cytokine signals. Carcinoma cell lines have contributed to the advancement of our understanding of cancer cell biology. Numerous researches have employed these carcinoma cell lines as a single- or mono-culture. However, it is also true that this mono-culture system cannot evaluate interactions between carcinoma and intratumoral stromal cells. Co-culture compositions of two different cell type of cancer tissues i.e., carcinoma cell lines and fibroblasts, were established in order to evaluate cell-cell interactions in these cancer microenvironment. This co-culture condition has the advantage of evaluating cell-cell interactions of cancer microenvironment. Therefore, in this review, we focused upon co-culture system and its application to understanding of various biological phenomenon as an ex vivo evaluation method of cancer microenvironment in breast cancer.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.262690188904886,"endowment":5.262690188904886,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"22265957","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2110150885","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":4.5174,"citation_percentile":0.95963134,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":2},{"year":2013,"count":7},{"year":2014,"count":11},{"year":2015,"count":13},{"year":2016,"count":19},{"year":2017,"count":18},{"year":2018,"count":20},{"year":2019,"count":14},{"year":2020,"count":11},{"year":2021,"count":18},{"year":2022,"count":9},{"year":2023,"count":16},{"year":2024,"count":16},{"year":2025,"count":12},{"year":2026,"count":6}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0960076011002469?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0960076011002469?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jsbmb.2011.12.004","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22265957","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Cancer Cells and Metastasis","3D Printing in Biomedical Research","Cellular Mechanics and Interactions","Animals","Aromatase","Breast Neoplasms","Carcinoma","Cell Line","Cell Line, Tumor","Cells, Cultured","Coculture Techniques","Female","Fibroblasts","Humans","Neoplasm Proteins","Stromal Cells","Translational Research, Biomedical","Tumor Cells, Cultured","Tumor Microenvironment"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Aromatase","Breast Neoplasms","Carcinoma","Cell Line","Cells, Cultured","Female","Fibroblasts","Humans","Neoplasm Proteins","Tumor Cells, Cultured","Stromal Cells","Coculture Techniques","Cell Line, Tumor","Translational Research, Biomedical","Tumor Microenvironment"],"keywords":["Stromal cell","Cell culture","Cancer cell","Tumor microenvironment","Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts","Cancer research","Cancer","Biology","Cell","Cell type","Stroma","Immunology","Cell biology","Genetics","Tumor cells"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-27T04:10:57.130739Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
