After SCI, it initiates a robust immune response. Considering the spleen is one of the most important immune organs, the present study further characterizes the inflammatory cytokine profile of spleen in acute SCI.
Methods
Adult rats were divided into sham and SCI groups (n = 36). SCI was produced at the T3 vertebral level. The whole blood and spleen was collected at 6, 24, 48, 72, 120, and 168 h after SCI. The levels of the inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and TGF-β) in spleen and serum were measured with an ELISA kit.
Results
The results showed significantly elevated levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α in spleen compared with control group levels. Inflammatory cytokine levels of spleen correlated negatively with spleen index.
Conclusion
It was found that inflammatory cytokines in spleen showed dynamic responses to SCI, which suggest their specificity change of spleen caused by SCI. These results suggest that a possible involvement of spleen in the initiation of the inflammatory response after SCI.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.258096538021482,"endowment":3.258096538021482,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"32447026","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3025172834","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Natural Science Foundation of China","grant_id":"","title":null},{"funder_name":"Key Research and Development Projects of Shaanxi Province","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":1.1965,"citation_percentile":0.77919088,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2021,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":5},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":7},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/legal/tdmrep-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0165572820302174?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0165572820302174?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jneuroim.2020.577264","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32447026","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Spinal Cord Injury Research","Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration Mechanisms","Nerve injury and regeneration"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Male","Random Allocation","Spinal Cord Injuries","Spleen","Thoracic Vertebrae","Cytokines","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","Rats"],"keywords":["Spleen","Medicine","Correlation","Spinal cord","Index (typography)","Immunology","Inflammation","Spinal cord injury","Pathology","Mathematics","Immune","Inflammatory Cytokine","Acute Phase"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-04T04:33:21.533036Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
