Information loss in images has been recently assessed via a method based on information theory and the employment of a contrast-detail (CD) phantom. In this study, the traditional CD phantom (air-Perspex) and a modified CD phantom were used.
Methods
Using the Agfa DX-D 600 digital flat panel system, six phantom radiographs were acquired at 70 kVp and 20 mAs. Three x-ray images were acquired for each phantom.
Results
Our results demonstrate that the material within the CD phantom influences total information loss (TIL) and image quality figure (IQF) measurements. The modified CD phantom provides a more realistic account of TIL and IQF for soft tissue radiology imaging.
Conclusion
It is recommended that a low inherent subject contrast phantom, such as this modified CD phantom, be added to the image quality assessment processes of radiology departments. In addition, use of both IQF and TIL to assess image quality will provide radiology departments with greater evidence on which to base decisions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.6931471805599453,"endowment":0.6931471805599453,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"31047361","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2734382758","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.12420752,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2023,"count":1}],"oa_status":"green","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/journal_contribution/Information_Loss_Via_Visual_Assessment_of_Radiologic_Images_Using_Modified_Version_of_the_Low-Contrast_Detailed_Phantom_at_Direct_DR_System/27505725","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/journal_contribution/Information_Loss_Via_Visual_Assessment_of_Radiologic_Images_Using_Modified_Version_of_the_Low-Contrast_Detailed_Phantom_at_Direct_DR_System/27505725","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1939865417301042?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1939865417301042?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmir.2017.02.069","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31047361","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Digital Radiography and Breast Imaging","Radiation Dose and Imaging","Radiology practices and education"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Imaging phantom","Contrast (vision)","Image quality","Radiography","Nuclear medicine","Digital radiography","Medical physics","Medicine","Computer science","Computer vision","Radiology","Image (mathematics)","Contrast-detail Phantom","Image Quality Figure","Iqf","Information Loss Theory"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Decent work and economic growth"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-29T22:53:54.428696Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
