But its potential toxicity when administered at a high dose as concentrated extract has not been completely investigated.
Aim of the study
The present study was aimed at evaluating potential reproductive and developmental toxicities of Pu-erh black tea extract (BTE) in Sprague Dawley rats.
Materials and methods
Growing rats were given BTE by gavage at levels of 0, 200, 700 and 2500mg/kg/day as the F0 generation in reproductive toxicity study. Additionally, BTE was administered to mate female rats from gestation day 0.5 through 19.5 at the doses of 0, 200, 700 and 2500mg/kg/day to evaluate the developmental toxicity.
Results
In the reproductive toxicity study, only 2500mg/kg/day BTE reduced the body weight gain and altered the relative organ weights including testes, prostata and ovary both for F0 parents and F1 offspring compared to the controls. High dose of BTE (2500mg/kg/day) administration caused developmental disturbances in embryo-to-foetus period including resorbed embryos, decreased embryo size and skeletal anomalies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the no-observed-adverse-effect level of BTE is 700mg/kg/day both for reproductive toxicity and developmental toxicities.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.3978952727983707,"endowment":2.3978952727983707,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23602733","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2078233550","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Key Technology R&D Program of the People's Republic of China","grant_id":"2007BAD58B05","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":0.6055,"citation_percentile":0.68634764,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0378874113002572?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0378874113002572?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jep.2013.04.009","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23602733","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Tea Polyphenols and Effects","Heavy Metals in Plants","Medicinal plant effects and applications","Animals","Bone and Bones","Camellia sinensis","Embryonic Development","Female","Male","No-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level","Osteogenesis","Plant Extracts","Rats","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","Reproduction","Weight Gain"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Bone and Bones","Female","Male","Osteogenesis","Plant Extracts","Reproduction","Weight Gain","Rats, Sprague-Dawley","No-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level","Camellia sinensis","Embryonic Development","Rats"],"keywords":["Developmental toxicity","Reproductive toxicity","Toxicity","Offspring","Camellia sinensis","Biology","Teratology","Gestation","No-observed-adverse-effect level","Embryo","Toxicology","Physiology","Traditional medicine","Animal science","Pregnancy","Medicine","Botany","Internal medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T19:45:18.603790Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
