However, experiments with a particular inbred mouse strain performed in different laboratories often yield inconsistent or conflicting data due to housing-specific variations in the composition and diversity of SPF microbiota. These variations affect immune and nonimmune cell functions, leading to systemic physiological changes. Consequently, microbiota-dependent inconsistencies have raised general doubts regarding the suitability of mice as model organisms. Since stability positively correlates with biological diversity, we postulate that increasing species diversity can improve microbiota stability and mouse physiology, enhancing robustness, reproducibility, and experimental validity. Similar to the generation of inbred mouse strains in the last century, we suggest a worldwide initiative to define a transplantable 'wild' microbiota that stably colonizes mice irrespective of housing conditions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.833213344056216,"endowment":2.833213344056216,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"39690004","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4405437512","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"491676693","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"446316360","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"256073931","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"SFB1160","title":null},{"funder_name":"Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft","grant_id":"unidentified","title":"unidentified"},{"funder_name":"National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":2.5869,"citation_percentile":0.90742727,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2025,"count":6},{"year":2026,"count":10}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.it.2024.11.013","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.it.2024.11.013","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1471490624002989?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1471490624002989?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39690004","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1016/j.it.2024.11.013","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Gut microbiota and health","Immune responses and vaccinations","Zoonotic diseases and public health","0301 basic medicine","03 medical and health sciences","Animals","Mice","Biomedical Research","Microbiota","Humans","Specific Pathogen-Free Organisms","Mice, Inbred Strains"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Humans","Mice, Inbred Strains","Specific Pathogen-Free Organisms","Reproducibility of Results","Biomedical Research","Mice","Microbiota"],"keywords":["Immunology","Biology","Medicine","Intensive care medicine","Reproducibility","Standardization","Metaorganism","Activation Threshold","Translational Mouse Models","Wildlings","Dirty Mice","Natural Microbiota","Mice","Biomedical Research","Microbiota","610","Animals","Humans","600","Mice, Inbred Strains","Specific Pathogen-Free Organisms"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T04:50:56.137716Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
