Stimulation of innate immunity by systemic or local administration of NOD1 and NOD2 agonists is an attractive means to prevent and treat infectious diseases. In this review, we discuss novel data concerning structural features of selective and non-selective (dual) NOD1 and NOD2 agonists, main signaling pathways and biological effects induced by NOD1 and NOD2 stimulation, including induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, type I interferons and antimicrobial peptides, induction of autophagy, alterations of metabolism. We also discuss interactions between NOD1/NOD2 and Toll-like receptor agonists in terms of synergy and cross-tolerance. Finally, we review available animal data on the role of NOD1 and NOD2 in protection against infections, and discuss how these data could be applied in human infectious diseases.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.8066624897703196,"endowment":3.8066624897703196,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"29207344","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2772602851","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Russian Science Foundation","grant_id":"16-15-10314","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":1.5953,"citation_percentile":0.82893184,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":7},{"year":2020,"count":8},{"year":2021,"count":6},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":6},{"year":2025,"count":10},{"year":2026,"count":3}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.elsevier.com/tdm/userlicense/1.0/","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1567576917304551?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S1567576917304551?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.intimp.2017.11.036","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29207344","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Immune Response and Inflammation","Pneumonia and Respiratory Infections","Neonatal Respiratory Health Research","Animals","Communicable Diseases","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Molecular Targeted Therapy","Nod1 Signaling Adaptor Protein","Nod2 Signaling Adaptor Protein","Peptidoglycan","Receptor Cross-Talk","Receptors, Pattern Recognition"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Communicable Diseases","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Peptidoglycan","Receptor Cross-Talk","Receptors, Pattern Recognition","Nod2 Signaling Adaptor Protein","Nod1 Signaling Adaptor Protein","Molecular Targeted Therapy"],"keywords":["NOD1","NOD2","Pattern recognition receptor","Peptidoglycan","Innate immune system","Biology","Nod","Receptor","Computational biology","Immunology","Genetics","Gene","Infectious diseases","Mucosal immunity","innate immunity","Muropeptides"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-29T20:33:29.135421Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
