The most recently emerged subvariants, BQ.1.1 and XBB, have been shown to effectively evade immunity generated by vaccines, including bivalent formulations designed specifically to target Omicron BA.5 [1–3]. In addition to diminishing vaccine effectiveness, the continued evolution of Omicron variants may limit the utility of available treatment options such as Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir or molnupiravir [4,5].
