These myopathies are characterized by progressive atrophy. Studies in muscle tissue from dysferlinopathy patients or dysferlin-deficient mice point out its importance in membrane repair. However, expression of dysferlin homologous proteins that restore sarcolemma repair function in dysferlinopathy animal models fail to arrest muscle wasting, therefore suggesting that dysferlin plays other critical roles in muscle function. In the present review, we discuss dysferlin functions in the skeletal muscle, as well as pathological mechanisms related to dysferlin mutations. Particular focus is presented related the effect of dysferlin on cell membrane related function, which affect its repair, vesicle trafficking, as well as Ca(2+) homeostasis. Such mechanisms could provide accessible targets for pharmacological therapies.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.356708826689592,"endowment":4.356708826689592,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"27349407","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2469156706","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"CONICYT","grant_id":"ACT-1121","title":null},{"funder_name":"FONDECYT","grant_id":"1151383","title":null},{"funder_name":"FONDECYT","grant_id":"1160495","title":null},{"funder_name":"PAI/Conicyt Proyecto de Inserción en la Academia","grant_id":"79140023","title":null},{"funder_name":"ICM-ECONOMIA","grant_id":"3160311","title":null},{"funder_name":"ICM-ECONOMIA","grant_id":"P09-022-F","title":null}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":3.0466,"citation_percentile":0.91594067,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":5},{"year":2019,"count":11},{"year":2020,"count":7},{"year":2021,"count":10},{"year":2022,"count":6},{"year":2023,"count":6},{"year":2024,"count":18},{"year":2025,"count":9},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"green","license":"cc-by-nc-nd","oa_locations":[{"url":"http://americanae.aecid.es/americanae/es/registros/registro.do?tipoRegistro=MTD&idBib=3263299","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://americanae.aecid.es/americanae/es/registros/registro.do?tipoRegistro=MTD&idBib=3263299","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0014488616301911?httpAccept=text/plain","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://api.elsevier.com/content/article/PII:S0014488616301911?httpAccept=text/xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.expneurol.2016.06.026","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27349407","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10533/232692","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://repositorio.uchile.cl/handle/2250/142922","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Muscle Physiology and Disorders","Exercise and Physiological Responses","Adipose Tissue and Metabolism"],"mesh_terms":["Dysferlin","Animals","Calcium","Homeostasis","Humans","Membrane Proteins","Muscle Proteins","Mutation","Connexins","Muscle, Skeletal","Muscular Dystrophies, Limb-Girdle"],"keywords":["Dysferlin","Skeletal muscle","Pathological","Neuroscience","Medicine","Function (biology)","Biology","Anatomy","Pathology","Cell biology","Membrane repair","Muscular dystrophies","Vesicle Trafficking","Dysferlinopathies","Inflammatory Processes","Connexin Hemichannels"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-11T18:52:12.775877Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
